After cooling, the shell is removed with air hammers, chisels, blasting and grinding. Extra care must be taken in order to preserve the detail. They say that the thrill is in the chase, but it sure doesn't apply for the most part to metal chasing. Though interesting as it might be, it is hard, dirty, and hot work.

These two photos show the bronzes with the shells removed, and in there naturally oxidized state. This will be removed during sand blasting after chasing.

After the sprues, pour cup and gates have been cut away with saws and grinders. The tedious job of the chase detailing begins. This is the most time consuming part of casting and also the most difficult.

After chasing, the pieces if cast separately, are welded together with the exact material with which they are cast. After proper re-chasing, the welds will disappear. Notice the contraption that I am using to hold the bronze in position for the weld. It is a robot like arm which I have developed for welders and am awaiting patent. This size will hold about 40 lbs. In an exact position.

After welding, the sculpture together it will be re-sandblasted and cleaned for the patina, that will follow.  As you can see the sandblasted areas are somewhat beige in color and the welded areas hold a rainbow patina. This will only remain for a few days and is not really suitable for use as a stable patina
